A Message From The Grocery Store Radio

So here I am sitting in the Wegmans grocery store cafe and as I attempt to gather my thoughts, “100 Years” by Five For Fighting begins to play on the radio.  I listen closer and it ends up serving as an important reminder.

The lyrics speak of young age and moving on to old age in an instant.  It reminds me about how life is so short and the value of each stage of one’s life.  You’re only young once.  You’re only exactly how old you are right now at this moment once, and bam– you’re a second older.  Now is the time to cherish every moment.

I feel like ever since I started high school I was in a rush to get older.  Maybe it was just me, but I have a feeling most high schoolers look forward to freedom at that age, right? Eventually I couldn’t wait to move out and go to college.  Then I was in college and as junior year rolled around, I couldn’t wait to finish senior year and then find a job that I loved.  When I graduated college I did find a job but there was something missing in my life; I knew I wanted more.  So I went back to school for a master’s degree, and now as I approach the end of my degree program, I am ever so excited to find myself in a career path with endless opportunities to grow, learn, and enjoy life the way I have been looking forward to since I was about 16 years old.

I think in all of this my thoughts are leading me to be more in the present.  While I am no doubt working hard now and enjoying life, I am doing my best to be thankful for everything I have and do now while I find the perfect start to my career path.  Sometimes we forget to acknowledge all that we’ve done to arrive where we are today and how much we’ve accomplished.

What do you do to stay present?  What are you thankful for?
